BWET Weekend ChallengeThis week’s challenge is for those readers who aren’t quite sure if bodyweight training is right for them.  The challenge is to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.  It is often said that change can only come from getting out of your “box” and exploring new things.  Hopefully these 5 reasons to be doing bodyweight training can help you understand the benefits and give you some motivation to just get started.

Number 1:  You can train anywhere.
Bodyweight exercises are perfect for on-the-go folks because you don;t need much room.  With just 10 feet of room, you get a full body workout that will get or keep you fit.  Bodyweight training can be done in a hotel room, bedroom, outside or even in your kitchen.  I’ve done them on the deck of a crew boat before.

Number 2:  Bodyweight Training saves you money.
If you don’t want to, you don’t have to buy ANY equipment.  You don’t even have to buy shoes.  You certainly don’t have to pay upward of 50 bucks a month for a gym membership.  How many times have you stood around the gym waiting for someone to finish playing on a piece of equipment?  In the immortal words of Mr. Crabs from Sponge Bob, “Time is money.  If you’re wasting time, you’re wasting money.”  True, you can buy some things to add resistance or nifty gadgets to hang rings from your ceiling, but it isn’t necessary to get a good, complete workout.

Number 3:  You get the benefits of a full body workout.
You will increase your strength, endurance and flexibility in just a few minutes a day with bodyweight training.
All the time you used to waste a the gym can be put toward other pursuits.  In fact, we have a whole section on 20 minute workouts to help you get the most out of your bodyweight training and your day.  They aren’t making them any longer.  There is a virtual cornucopia of great multi-count bodyweight exercises to give you a full body workout complete with a nice Cardio workout at the same time.  Kinda like multitasking for your workout routine.  Why not kill two birds with one stone?

Number 4:  You will build a better mind-body connection.
With literally tens of thousands of nerve connections in your body, the connection between your conscious mind and your body can seem a little disconnected.  Have you ever done something you haven’t done in a long time and felt the next day that you were sore in places where you didn’t know you had?  For me it was building fences when I was younger.  It was usually only a once a year event, but it sure let me know where I was weak.  Bodyweight training, unlike the bodybuilding exercise machines in the gym, use your “accessory” muscles as well as the target muscles.  You will become more acutely aware of all parts of your body and be able to more finely control your coordination.

Number 5:  Bodyweight exercises are just more fun.
Staying motivated is the single biggest hurdle people face when starting or even sticking to a workout regimen.  This usually comes when they reach a point of boredom with their routines.  After a couple of weeks of doing the same isolated exercises on the same machines in the same gym, you will just naturally get completely bored with it and your mind will no longer see it as a challenge and exciting.  Sure if you do the same basic bodyweight exercises, you will also get bored out of your skull, but with the countless variations and combinations available, not to mention the endless number of exercise venues available to you, you can keep it fresh and exciting.

So, that’s it.  My 5 reasons to step into a new world of fitness and try bodyweight training.  Success is reserved for action takers.  Only those willing to take the step will find the reward at the end of the journey.

    You’re so right about bodyweight training being fun, there’s so many things you can do with just your bodyweight that are just not possible with free weights or machines, or whatever else.

    A lot of people I train with say they don’t like bodyweight training because they think there is a ceiling to it as far as getting better in shape goes, they say “I’m not going to be getting any heavier so after a while my workouts wont be as effective”.

    Its somewhat of a decent point, but then there are some really difficult bodyweight exercises out there that you can still get a decent workout years down the line.
